Alicia Sacramone

At the 2003 National Championships, Sacramone placed 14th in the all-aroundcompetition, was awarded a bronze medal for the floor exerciseand finished fourth on vault, earning her a spot on the national team. She also competed in her first international competition with senior class, the Massilia Gym Cup, Marseille, France. There, she placed fourth on vault, and ninth on floor. In 2004 Sacramone helped the U.S. win a team gold medal at the Pacific Alliance Championships in Honolulu and also won the individual title of vault. The media noticed her performance and began to talk about her as a possible contender for the American team in the Athens 2004 Olympics. But during the 2004 U.S. Nationals, an error-filled performance dashed her hopes of earning an Olympic selection. She finished 19th overall, not qualified for the Olympic Trials. Mohini Bhardwaj was a close second to her for the silver vault title. A back injury forced her to miss time from work. Sacramone continued competing in late 2004 as a member of the national team. She was assigned to various international competitions which included the Pan American Individual Event Championships, where she won the floor and vault titles. [16] At the World Cup Finals in Birmingham, England, she attracted media attention when she upset reigning Olympic vault champion Monica Rosu of Romania to win the top spot in the event.
