Machado was the winner of her first prize in the 1995 Miss Maracay pageant, and then she won the 1995 Miss Venezuela pageant representing Yaracuy state, and later she won the Miss Universe 1996 crown in Las Vegas. Early in her training, she resisted the plastic surgery she was advised to undergo and was a notable part of Venezuelan beauty pageant culture. The second-place winner, Jacqueline Aguilera, also won the Miss World 1995 crown, being the second time two Venezuelans from the same pageant won two world titles. Machado's reign came as American businessman Donald Trump took ownership of the Miss Universe pageant. Machado was forced to shed weight while preparing for Miss Universe. Machado claimed that when she won the title, she weighed 116 pounds and was obese and anorexic. While she was Miss Universe, Machado gained the equivalent of 12 pounds of weight gain, drawing considerable press attention. The President of Miss Universe Organization denied the notion that she was replaced by Taryn Mansell Miss Universe Organization's third-place winner. Machado was being pressured by Trump and other officials from the pageant to lose weight. Trump asked Machado to aid her in her journey to a healthier lifestyle. Trump set up a group of 80 journalists to watch her sweat in the gym. Machado later described it as "very bad taste". A scandal that brought her straight to world fame, making her the most publicized and well-known Miss Universe in history.
