Machado won the 1995 Miss Maracay pageant, and she won the 1995 Miss Venezuela pageant representing Yaracuy state. She then won she won the Miss Universe 1996 crown in Las Vegas. In her early days of training, she resisted plastic surgery that was recommended to her, notable in Venezuelan beauty pageant culture. Jacqueline Aguilera was the Miss World 1995 runner-up. This marks the second time in a row that two Venezuelans have taken home two world titles through the same pageant. Machado was appointed Miss Universe by Donald Trump, an American businessman. Machado had to lose weight to prepare for Miss Universe. Machado claimed that she weighed 116 pounds when she won Miss Universe. She was also anorexic. Machado claimed that she gained 12 pounds in her reign as Miss Universe. This was much attention in the press. The President of Miss Universe Organization denied that the organization was considering substituting her for runner-up Taryn Mansell of Aruba. Following pressure to shed weight from Trump and other officials from the pageant, Machado asked Trump to aid her in establishing a healthier lifestyle. Trump organized for 80 reporters to be present to watch her sweat in a gym. Machado later described it as "very bad taste". It was this scandal that brought her international recognition and became the most well-known Miss Universe ever.
