Machado was the winner of the Miss Maracay 1995 pageant. Machado also won the Miss Venezuela 1995 pageant. The Miss Universe 1996 crown was given to Machado in Las Vegas. Machado refused plastic surgery during her early training. This is a notable feature of Venezuelan beauty pageant culture. The runner-up, Jacqueline Aguilera, also won the Miss World 1995 crown, marking the second time that two Venezuelans from the same pageant took home two world title. Machado's reign began when American businessman Donald Trump took ownership of the Miss Universe pageant. Machado had to lose weight in preparation for Miss Universe. Machado declared that she was about 116 pounds at the time she won Miss Universe. She was also anorexic. Machado claimed she lost 12 pounds in her time as Miss Universe. This was an enormous amount of attention from the media. The President of Miss Universe Organization denied that the organization was contemplating replacing her with the runner-up Taryn Mansell from Aruba. After mounting pressure to lose weight by Trump and other officials from the pageant, Machado asked Trump to help her to transition into living a healthier life. Trump made arrangements for 80 journalists to "watch [her] sweat" in the gym, which Machado later called "in bad taste". The scandal propelled her to international fame and became the most well-known Miss Universe ever.
