Robert Lane Saget was born into a Jewish family in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on May 17, 1956. He was the son of hospital administrator Rosalyn and supermarket chain manager Benjamin Saget. His family moved to Norfolk, Virginia early in his life. He was a student at Lake Taylor High School. Saget later said that his ability to laugh was developed when being a rebellious pupil in the Conservative synagogue Temple Israel in Norfolk. He could not locate family in Norfolk which is why he moved to Philadelphia to celebrate his bar mitzvah. Saget would later say that his sense of humor developed while he was a rebellious student at Temple Israel the Conservative synagogue located in Norfolk. However his Honors English teacher noticed his talents and advised to pursue a career in acting.
