Porter was the daughter of Worcester's Jewish parents. Her mother was the Charlotte Klein Dance Center's founder. The father of Porter, Ric Porter, was co-founder, lead singer, and songwriter of Worcester-based group Zonkaraz. Laura Klein, her mother Laura Klein, also taught dance and coached Diane as well as Elaine Klimaszewski, who appeared on Star Search in 1987 in the junior dance category before they became known as the Coors Light Twins. Producer of the show, while visiting Los Angeles to film the twins' appearances on Star Search, heard Porter perform in the lobby of the hotel and scheduled her for the following episode. Porter started singing and performing at the age of three. When she was five she became the youngest Star Search participant to win the competition. The same year, she also was on Pee Wee's Playhouse in Season 2 as a member of the playhouse gang members in Season 2. Porter was in a variety of films as a child before becoming famous for her performance as the lead in the 1991 film Curly Sue opposite Jim Belushi. She was the youngest child of Lynn Redgrave in the 1989 ABC sitcom Chicken Soup. She was supposed to become a regular cast member of Perfect Strangers the following year but was cut off after a single episode.
