Porter was the daughter of Worcester's Jewish parents. Her mother was the Charlotte Klein Dance Center's founder. The father of Porter, Ric Porter, was co-founder, lead singer and songwriter of the Worcester-based group Zonkaraz. Laura Klein, her mother, was also a dance teacher and coach. Diane and Elaine Klimaszewski were featured in Star Search 1987 in the junior category, and later became known as the Coors Light Twins. While in Los Angeles for the twins' appearance on Star Search, the show's producer heard Porter singing in the hotel lobby and scheduled her appearance in the following episode. Porter started singing and performing when she was just three years old. At five years old she was the youngest Star Search participant to win the contest. In the was the same year that she was in Pee Wee's Playhouse as a member of the playhouse gang members in Season 2. As a child, Porter appeared in many films. Her most famous role is for her part as Curly Sue, opposite Jim Belushi. On television she was the youngest daughter of Lynn Redgrave on the short-lived ABC sitcom Chicken Soup in 1989. The following year, she was scheduled to become a regular cast member of Perfect Strangers, but her character was removed after just one episode.
