Under the professional name Adele St. Mara, she signed a contract with Columbia Pictures[citation needed] and gained experience in Columbia Pictures "B" features and comedy shorts. Then, she was changed to Adele Mara. Mara was a receptionist in Three Stooges' film I Can Hardly Wait. Mara and Leslie Brooks played the sisters of Rita Hayworth's character the Fred Astaire film You Were Never Lovelier. In Alias Boston Blackie (1942) she takes on the lead female character as the daughter of an escapee and falsely accused convict. When her Columbia contract ended the actress moved to Republic Pictures where she was a regular on the studio's westerns, and outdoor adventures. She was in The Vampire's Ghost, Wake of the Red Witch with John Wayne, Angel in Exile (leading lady), Sands of Iwo Jima with John Wayne in which she was John Agar's love interest, California Passage (leading lady), and Don Siegel's Count the Hours (supporting role)
