Aimee Mann

Aimee Elizabeth Mann (born September 8th in 1960) is an American singer-songwriter. In the span of four decades she has released over a dozen albums as a solo artist and with other musicians. Her humorous, literate, and sardonic lyrics on dark topics are what make her distinct. In the 90s, her work with Jon Brion was influential in American alternative music. Mann was born in Richmond Virginia and was a student at Berklee College of Music, Boston, Massachusetts. In the 80s, following playing with the Young Snakes and Ministry, she founded the new wave group 'Til Tuesday and composed their top ten single "Voices Carry" (1985). The band released three albums and disbanded in the year 1990, after which Mann quit to pursue her own career. Mann's debut solo album was Whatever in 1993. I'm With Stupid came out in 1995. They received a lot of praise however, they did not sell a lot. This led to Mann in the middle with her label. Mann gained more recognition as she sang the soundtrack for the Paul Thomas Anderson film Magnolia (1999) and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song and the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal. After Mann's record company Geffen did not release her third album, Bachelor No. Mann made it available for sale on her own label SuperEgo Records in 2000. It was a strong seller and received critical acclaim. Mann became a career artist who was able to work outside the constraints of the major labels.
