Mehmet Oz

The son of Turkish immigrants, Oz was raised in Wilmington, Delaware, and graduated from Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania. Oz was a dual citizen of Turkey as well as the U.S., served 60 days in the Turkish Army in 1980s to preserve his Turkish citizenship. Then, he began his residency in surgery at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in the year 1986. In 2001, he became an instructor of surgery at Columbia University, and later retired as professor emeritus 2018. Oprah Winfrey was the very first guest on Second Opinion alongside Dr. Oz in 2003. She also had more than 60 appearances on the Oprah Winfrey Show. In 2009, The Dr. Oz Show was a weekly television program about medical matters and health, was established by Winfrey's Harpo Productions and Sony Pictures Television and ran for 13 seasons. Oz's support of pseudoscience, for instance regarding topics such as faith healing and alternative medical practices has been criticized by numerous medical journals and doctors. He ran for the U.S. Senate in 2022 Pennsylvania as a conservative Republican. Oz lost the race to Democratic Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman. Oz was the first Muslim candidate nominated to the U.S. Senate by any major political party.
