In Canberra, Australia on November 26th, 1988, he set the world record for 266 kg in the clean and jerk, and 476 kg in the total. He also been able to lift 210 kg during the snatch.While these results are no longer recognized as world records because of subsequent restructuring of the competitive weight classes (in 1993 1998, 1993 and 1998 and in 2018) in 2019 the clean and jerk was the most impressive ever attained in competition until it was broken December 2021 by Lasha's 267kg , and his 476kg total remained the highest ever achieved until broken by Lasha Talakhadze of Georgia at the 2019 World Weightlifting Championships while also setting the record-breaking clean and jerk record of 264kg for the restructured weight classes. Hossein Rezazadeh's record for the 2004 Summer Olympics record of 263.5 kg was broken by Taranenko, representing the Unified Team at Barcelona's 1992 Olympics. Taranenko took home the silver medal in super-heavyweight, with 425 kg.
