Burnham's popularity as an YouTube celebrity in the latter part of 2000 earned him fame for his subversive stand-up and humorous stand-up. Burnham has released four comedy albums through Comedy Central Records and three comedy specials: Words, Words & Words (2010) and What. (2013) and Make Happy (2016). He was also a co-star in the MTV mockumentary Zach Stone is Gonna be Famous (2013) and released Egghead or You'll Never survive on Ideas All by Yourself (2013). After performing in comedy and directing, he decided to switch career paths and directed the critically-acclaimed drama Eighth Grade (2018). He has also directed comedy specials for other comedians, and also appeared in the Oscar Award-winning comedy thriller Promising Young Lady (2020). Inside was released by Netflix to great praise. The film was nominated for Outstanding Direction for Variety Special, Outstanding Music Director, Outstanding Writing for Variety Special and Outstanding Directing. Inside was awarded the Best Music Film and Best Song Written for Visual Media nominations for the 64th Grammy Awards. The special included three tracks that were certified gold by the United States Billboard and the accompanying album, Inside (The Songs).
