Sweeney made her TV debut at the age of five in the form of a Kodak commercial. Then, she was featured in the episode "I Can't Help Saying Goodbye" from the horror show Tales from the Darkside. The episode featured a young girl who is able to tell the moment when others are about to die. The show was a short-lived ABC sitcom Family Man in 1988. In the following year, she was named Christy McCray in Brand New Life. The miniseries, which was created by Chris Carter, aired on the NBC network's Magical World of Disney October 1989. The miniseries featured Barbara Eden as Sweeney’s mother and Don Murray her new stepfather. The show was slated for to be a standalone series. However, the Disney attempt was unsuccessful. Sweeney was being a US size 12, was not considered obese based on medical guidelines. But she was larger than the other TV stars. In her memoir from 2004 All The Days of My Life (So Far), she narrated all gossip in the tabloids as well as her personal struggles.
