Many major awards have been conferred to his name, including an Academy Award. A Grammy Award. Four Emmy Awards. Two Directors Guild of America Awards. Awarded the AFI Life Achievement Award. The Kennedy Center Honor in 2007. Five of his films have been inducted into the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant".Scorsese received an MA from New York University's Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development in 1968. His first directorial effort, "Who's That Knocking At My Door" (1967), was selected for inclusion in the Chicago Film Festival. Through the 1970s and 1980s decades, Scorsese emerged as one of the major figures in the New Hollywood era. His films, heavily inspired by his Italian-American heritage and upbringing in New York City, center on macho-pretentious insecure men. They examine machismo, crime, the nihilist, and Catholic notions of guilt and redemption. His distinctive styles include extensive use of slow motion and freeze frames as well as graphic depictions of brutal violence, as well as the usage of profanity.His 1973 crime film Mean Streets, dealing with violence and machismo, and exploring Catholic concepts of redemption and guilt, was the basis for his style of filmmaking. Scorsese has won Cannes' Palme d'Or with Taxi Driver (1976), a psychological thriller starring Robert De Niro. He was later linked to Scorsese through eight other films that included New York, New York (1977), Raging Bull (1980), The King of Comedy (1982), Goodfellas (90) and Casino (1995). Scorsese was a major star in the decade of 2000 and 2010 and received praise from critics and box office success through several collaborations with Leonardo DiCaprio. The collaborations include Gangs of New York (2002), The Aviator (2004), The Departed (2006), Shutter Island (2010) and The Wolf of Wall Street (2013). Returning to his favorite area of crime-films, Scorsese collaborated with De Niro again on The Irishman (2019). Scorsese also directed the black comedy After Hours (1985), The Age of Innocence (1993) The Irishman (2019).
