Kabaeva stayed with Viner she made her debut on the international stage for Russia in the year 1996. Kabaeva was 15, and was the winner of the 1998 European Championships held in Portugal. At that time, she was the youngest participant of the Russian squad, competing with internationally renowned teammates Amina Zaripova and Yana Batyrshina and Irina Tchachina. Kabaeva was also the 1999 European Champion from Hungary and the 1999 World Title in Osaka (Japan). Kabaeva has won five All-Around titles at the European Championships. Kabaeva was expected to take home All-Around Gold at the 2000 Sydney Olympics in Australia, made an error and dropped her hoops. She was able to get it back, but she was out of the arena where the competition was. Kabaeva took the bronze medal, with a score of 39.466. (Rope 9.925; Hoop 9.641, Ball 9.950; Ribbon 9.950). Yulia Raskina, from Belarus, took the silver medal. Yulia Barsukova (from Russia) took home the Olympic gold.
