Kabaeva was a student at Viner and played for Russia for her first international appearance in 1996. Kabaeva 15 was the winner of the 1998 European Championships held in Portugal. She was then the youngest participant of the Russian team, playing alongside Yana Batyrshina, Amina Zaripova as well as Irina Tamchina, who are internationally renowned teammates. Kabaeva was the 1999 European Champion from Hungary and the 1999 World Title in Osaka (Japan). Kabaeva was awarded five All-Around titles in total during the European Championships. Kabaeva was expected to take home All-Around Gold at the 2000 Sydney Olympics in Australia she made a mistake and fell off her hoops. She was able to get it back in the area outside of the competition. Kabaeva took the bronze medal, with a score of 39.466. (Rope 9.925; Hoop 9.641, Ball 9.950; Ribbon 9.950). Yulia Raskina from Belarus won the silver medal. Yulia Barsukova (from Russia) took home the Olympic gold medal.
