Adele St. Mara was her name professionally. She was awarded an agreement from Columbia Pictures [citation needed]. She worked on comedy shorts as well as "B" feature films in the studio. In the end, the name was changed to Adele Mara. Mara was receptionist in Three Stooges' film I Can Hardly Wait. Mara as well as Leslie Brooks played the sisters of Rita Hayworth's character in the Fred Astaire film You Were Never Lovelier. In Alias Boston Blackie (1942), she plays the leading female role, as the daughter of an escaped and falsely found guilty prisoner. After her Columbia contract ended the actress moved to Republic Pictures where she was frequent on the studio's westerns and outdoor adventure. She was a part of in The Vampire's Ghost, Wake of the Red Witch with John Wayne, Angel In Exile (leading woman), Sands of Iwo Jima where John Agar was John's love interest, California Passage and Don Siegel's Count the Hours as a supporting role.
